Major chords are characterized by their bright, upbeat sounding quality. These are the ones that beginning guitar players usually learn first. Major chords are always shown by their name alone. Numbers correspond to notes of the relevant Major scale.

Start off on the right foot by getting your hands on the instructional materials you need. Start by playing the string open, then with your finger on the first fret, and then again with your finger on the second fret. If the notes start to sound muffled, off-key, or just plain bad, take a look at your fretting finger to make sure that you are holding down the note firmly and your finger is placed directly in the center of the fret.

Practice stretching your fingers over the frets, playing single strings as you do this. This exercise stretches your fingers, while also enabling you to increase the speed with which you move the fingers across the frets. Practice listening to a recording of the song you are learning, first without the lyrics and chords in front of you and then again with the chords. Then listen a third time without, and see if you can readily identify where the chord changes happen. Practice it and steady improvement will be the result.

Pick the chord type you want to learn (typically Major or Minor to start) and then any key you click will show you that chord in the first position. The first thing you’ll see is the C chord. Pick one that sounds right and I am sure you will be happy with it.
